About

Recovering the word behind "church."

A free, ad-free study resource devoted to one of the most consequential words in the New Testament.

Biblical Ekklesia is a free, ad-free study resource devoted to one of the most consequential words in the New Testament: ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia). The English word "church" is a translation choice, not the original text. This site exists to help readers recover what the biblical authors actually wrote — a "called-out assembly" of people, gathered in homes, around Christ.

Through long-form articles, a curated library of books, podcasts, videos, and websites, and a growing FAQ, we trace the word through its Greek origins, its use in the Septuagint, and every appearance in the New Testament. Our aim is careful, Scripture-first study that lets the Word interpret the Word.

The site is written for anyone who wants to take that question seriously: seminary and university students, researchers and writers, pastors and teachers preparing to preach, and ordinary believers who have simply wondered why the Bible they read sounds different from the church they attend.

Biblical Ekklesia is built and maintained by an independent, non-denominational editorial team of writers and researchers who love the church and love the text. We hold to the historic Christian faith, we work from the Scriptures as our final authority, and we publish everything free of charge — supported by readers rather than advertising.
